Natural Building
In June 2013 I initiated a charity called Get Rugged to share information and encourage others, especially affordable housing providers, to consider natural building as a means to meet their own housing needs. I undertook intensive research into strawbale building for social housing and alternative ways to make building naturally more affordable and feasible. Despondent at the lack of receptivity and support, I dissolved the charity in 2021.
Now I share my passion for building and living regeneratively through our Hobbit Hideaway, a natural home set in its own "wee slice of Scottish paradise" that can be visited, experienced, or simply followed on social media for ideas or a little inspiration. We attract the loveliest visitors and many tell us about small changes that they will make due to their holiday experience. We practice, demonstrate and encourage environmental consideration, one visitor at a time!
I created this booklet as an introduction and overview to natural building in the UK. It provides a step by step approach and suggests ideas to help get you started.
Samuel, a student on the hobbit build came back to help us build our chook palace. Get Rugged commissioned him to create another booklet to be freely shared, outlining the process we used to build the chooks natural home and more...
